With one week to go in Team Tennis Black would appear to be the colour to be seen in this Spring on a tennis court anyway! Read on....
The Ladies Team Tennis commenced on Thursday, 13th January and is being run by Deirdre Naughton, Grainne Doyle and Sue Spencer. 120 ladies with 6 teams of 10 levels are playing in this event.
Nothing separates the top 3 teams with the Black Team on 75 points and the Blue Team and the Orange Team on 74 points each.
The weather has proved to be a challenge and 4 nights so far have had disrupted play on the outdoor courts due to frost and galeforce winds. 17 matches have had to be re-arranged from last Thursday, 3rd February and Friday, 4th February.
Despite all this, lots of great tennis is being played and the team captains are very enthusiastic in their role of team encouragement and team colours are being worn with pride.
The Men's Team Tennis which commenced on Wednesday, 12th January and is being run by Adrian Brannigan, Peter Furlong and John Kilkenny is suffering from the same weather problems as the Ladies. The Black Team are on 86 points closely followed by the Green Team on 83 points and the Blue Team on 71 points. Currently there is a backlog of 20 matches and depending on the results of those matches the Black Team could find themselves being overhauled. The top 2 teams will playoff on Friday, 18th. February for first and second place.
Marjorie Flood, the Social Secretary has, with the help of her Social Committee organised a joint event on Friday, 18th February with the presentation of prizes to the Ladies Team Tennis winners followed by the presentation of prizes to the Men's Team Tennis winners. Hot food will be served and a live band will play from 10pm on.
